making news this morning -- extreme heat. >> sure, it's summer. but for millions today, dangerous, oppressive temperatures are settling in. celebration and joy. where it's needed most. japan's world cup team, the toast of the nation after beating team usa. and concert chaos. a stage collapses sending hundreds scrambling for safety. good morning. the heat wave melting a big chunk of the nation is showing no signs of letting up. >> that's right. the humidity is creating oppressive conditions. today, chicago could see its highest temperature in five years.

>> abc's karen travers as more on the heat that's already spending east. >> reporter: they tossed two tons of ice into theheater to try to cool things down. this mud-summer heat wave is g gpping the middle of the nation. for 17 states. texas to minnesota. east to ohio. in five states, temperatures dropped the century mark. the high pressure system is expected to hover across the midwest for five more sweltering days before heading east. this week, 40 states will see temperatures of 90 degrees or more. >> not moving at all. unpacking its bags. this high pressure for many days to come as it continues to intensify and grow in overall size. >> reporter: for beach goers the soaring temperatures means fun in the sun. >> coming out early to get the beach before it gets packed with people. >> reporter: but for some people,

surf to the northern bahamas. it's not expected to pose a threat to the u.s. our other big story of this morning, the ladies world cup. they thought they won in overtime. >> elation turned to disappointment yesterday as the team from japan tied the final match and then won it on penalty kicks. >> a welcome bit of good sign for japan. >> reporter: team japan's victory over the united states capped an emotional run for the perennial underdogs. japanese upset local favorite germany and sweden to the reach the finals, all the while playing to heal a wounded nation. back home, nervous fans stayed up to root on their beloved team. it didn't matter that the game started at 3:45 on a monday morninin fans desperate to cheer again, got the victory they waited so long for.

ford's ceo says that there may be an economic recovery in your future. in an interview with usa today, he said that the improving economy is the result of decreasing oil prices and moving beyond the japanese earthquake. he also says that manufacturing is the foundation of that recovery and job growth. worries about europe's banking woes and the debt talks here are keeping overseas markets unsettled. tokyo's nikkei average picked up 38 points today. in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the dow lost 177

the nasdaq index was off by 70. it's appearing more likely that the nation's second largest bookstore chain will be liquidated. borders still has about 400 stores and employs almost 11,000 people. wow, big surprise there.e. days after their whirlwind trip to canada and california, it's time for the duke and duchess of cambridge to get down to business. they'll be britain's business ambassadors. making trips to promote british firms. they did some of that during their visit to los angeles. they'll continue this more now. it's reported that another trip is already in the works. and harry potter keeps working its magic. it's on course to become a billion-dollar hit. after taking nearly half worldwide that weekend. here in the u.s., the final harry potter film took in $169 million domestically.
